Happy grandparents after cataract surgery. Great vision, no glasses.

Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery removes the cloudy natural lens and replaces it with a clear plastic lens to give you clear vision and enjoy life.

Summary

The overall aim of cataract surgery is to improve your vision as much as possible. Most patients will achieve excellent vision for distance. We can use Special lenses to correct astigmatism and provide excellent close-up vision, without the need for glasses. My Eye Clinic has a team of expert cataract surgeons in Newcastle. The quick and painless operation can improve your vision with minimal cataract surgery recovery time.

Development of Cataracts

As you age, your natural eye lens becomes thicker and eventually cloudy. The first thing you may notice is difficulty in focusing for near. You may need to get reading glasses to be able to cope with small print. Seeing clearly at arm-length distance may also become difficult. As the lens thickens further, it becomes sufficiently cloudy to be called a cataract. Your lens will never clear again and so it will need to be removed to help you see clearly again. Your vision may continue to decline, even with glasses. Glasses may become an inconvenience, that you have to rely on. They may interfere with your work, hobbies or social life. Some people don’t like how they look in spectacles.

Cataract Surgery versus Refractive Lens Exchange

Cataract Surgery removes the cloudy lens and gives a unique opportunity to correct your spectacle correction. At the time of surgery your cloudy lens is replaced by plastic lens of a specific power to correct your vision, so you don’t need glasses for distance. In addition, there are a range of special lenses that can correct astigmatism and also allow clear focusing at intermediate distances and near. For many people this can allow crystal clear glasses-free vision, at all distances. For those people who are yet to develop a visually significant cataract they can take advantage of the same surgery, now called Refractive Lens Exchange, to insert a special lens to also allow crystal clear glasses-free vision, at all distances.

Aims of Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is more than a medical procedure; it’s a transformative experience that can restore your vision and significantly enhance your quality of life. Imagine waking up to a world where colors are more vibrant, details are crisper, and everything around you is clear and vivid.  Thanks to advances in cataract surgery, this dream outcome is within your reach.
1. Crystal Clear Vision:
The primary goal of cataract surgery is to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a clear artificial lens, known as an intraocular lens (IOL). This procedure can dramatically improve your vision, making everyday tasks easier and more enjoyable. Whether it’s reading a book, watching television, or driving at night, you’ll notice a significant improvement in clarity and sharpness.
2. Brighter Colours:
Cataracts can dull colours and reduce contrast. After surgery, many patients are amazed at how much brighter and more vibrant the world appears. Imagine seeing the true hues of a sunset, the rich greens of a garden, or the deep blues of the ocean. This renewed colour perception can make life feel more vivid and exciting.
3. Freedom from Glasses and Contact Lenses:
One of the most exciting potential outcomes of cataract surgery is the possibility of reduced dependence on glasses and contact lenses. With advanced multifocal or accommodating IOLs, many patients achieve excellent vision at multiple distances. Imagine the freedom of waking up and seeing clearly without reaching for your glasses or inserting contact lenses. Whether you’re reading, working on a computer, or enjoying outdoor activities, this newfound freedom and confidence can significantly enhance your daily life.
4. Enhanced Quality of Life:
Clear vision can boost your overall quality of life. You’ll likely find it easier to engage in hobbies, socialize with friends and family, and maintain your independence. The ability to see clearly can also improve your safety, reducing the risk of falls and accidents.

Successful Cataract Surgery

Modern cataract surgery at My Eye Clinic has a high success rate, with over  100% of patients achieving a vision of 6/12 or better (audit October 2022, exceeding the Royal College of Ophthalmologists standard of 90%). The procedure is one of the most commonly performed and safest surgeries worldwide. At My Eye Clinic our excellent cataract surgery results depend on:
1. Advanced Technology:
With the latest surgical techniques and technologies, including premium IOLs, the precision and effectiveness of the procedure have never been higher. These advancements reduce the risk of complications and enhance visual outcomes, including the potential for reduced dependence on glasses and contact lenses.
2. Experienced Surgeons:
Cataract surgery is performed by highly skilled and experienced Ophthalmologists, who hold substantive NHS Consultant Contracts. Their expertise ensures that the surgery is tailored to your specific needs, maximizing the likelihood of a successful outcome.
3. Personalized Treatment:
Each patient’s eyes are unique, and modern cataract surgery allows for a personalized approach. Surgeons can choose from a variety of IOLs to best suit your lifestyle and visual needs, whether you require correction for astigmatism, near vision, or distance vision. This personalized treatment increases the likelihood of achieving excellent visual acuity without the need for glasses or contact lenses.
4. Post-Surgery Care:
Comprehensive post-operative care ensures that any potential issues are promptly addressed, further enhancing the success rate of the surgery. Regular follow-up appointments and adherence to your surgeon’s advice play a crucial role in achieving and maintaining optimal vision.
In conclusion, cataract surgery offers a promising path to achieving your dream of clear, vibrant vision and freedom from glasses or contact lenses. With high success rates, advanced technology, and expert care, the likelihood of restoring your vision and enhancing your quality of life is very high. Don’t let cataracts cloud your future—take the first step towards a brighter, clearer world today.

The Process

Cataract Assessment

During your first clinic visit your consultant will ask about your general medical history and specific eye problems. You will have a thorough eye examination to determine the presence and type of any cataract. Together we will decide on the best new lens for you.

You will have a cataract assessment appointment with our Cataract Sister.  She will explain in detail all about the cataract operation and follow-up. She will take detailed measurements of your eyes to determine the required power of your new lens.

Your surgeon will carry out your cataract operation under local anaesthetic. They will ensure that you eye is numbed using drops and/or an injection. You will be awake throughout surgery. If you would like sedation, we can arrange this with one of our consultant anaesthetists. You should not feel any pain or discomfort.

During cataract surgery, the consultant will open the outer lining of the natural lens to remove the cloudy contents using an ultrasound machine and lots of water. Your surgeon will then place a new artificial lens inside the eye, allowing you to see more clearly. You will go home with drops to take. Your recovery time following cataract surgery is expected to be very short, within a day or two your sight will be restored.

I nervously agreed to get this surgery done after pressure from my wife as I kept getting irritated by my Glasses always getting in the way of my life. I made my appointment at MY Eye Clinic. All the team were extremely informative and took time to answer all my questions. I had full lens replacement and the surgery was painless and I really don’t understand why I was worried. The results are fantastic and I now have 20/20 vision at the age 50! I went diving again this year and just amazed by the difference. Biggest difference has been in everyday life, looking at my phone, reading food labels etc. don’t wait get it done it’s a life changer and the team and after care at MY Eye are the best !

I have recently had a clear lens extraction with a multifocal lens implant procedure carried out by Mr Ghosh. In my initial appointment everything was explained in depth about the procedure and the after care. My experience from start to finish was exceptional, all the staff in my eye clinic were professional, helpful and very welcoming. My goal was to be glasses free and that is my position since my operation. My only regret is that I didn’t have my lens exchange procedure done earlier!! I would like to thank Mr Ghosh and his team for my first class treatment. This procedure has definitely been life changing for me!

The whole experience, from my initial telephone enquiry, the consultation and the procedure, to the follow up appointment was first class. Abbie, Eyelid Service Manager, was extremely helpful and professional, explaining everything fully over the telephone, which instilled confidence in me. My consultation with Mr Boyce was thorough assessing the problem and explaining what the procedure entailed. The procedure was a great success and Mr Boyce and his nursing staff were brilliant.I would highly recommend My Eye Clinic without any hesitation.

I’m 58 years old and have one good eye for close sight and one good eye for far sight. I was investigating laser eye surgery, to at least one eye, to make at least one side work better. The surgery is easy to find, immaculately clean and a calm oasis of tranquility, on the hot day I got there. The booking process had been easy, I had rang and booked in person and unlike Optical Express in Newcastle, I hadn’t been diagnosed over the phone and pushed towards the most expensive treatment in two minutes.Optical express did this when I made the appointment and I felt so untrusting of them giving me impartial advice I cancelled the appointment before I went, I just had a bad feeling about them.My Eye Clinic were different. I was greeted by reception, taken to the optometrist and my eyes tested and then taken to see Dr Ghosh. One word of warning. They put drops in your eyes and it does make everything blurry and believe me, you won’t want to be driving after that. Get the bus from Regents Center, the stop is just outside the clinic, it’s the way forward. He looked at my tests, did some more checks and finally said basically “ you’ve got an excellent eye on alternate sides for each type of vision, the brain is compensating and you don’t need this surgery right now- I’d be reluctant to take you as a patient”How often does a businessman say that?He spent a long time explaining this to me, I was disappointed at first but then I understood what he was getting at. Patient outcome and satisfaction is most important to him. He’s in it for the long term.“ Come back” he said, “if one of your good eyes deteriorates” and we will look again then and that is exactly what I will do.I know this is a long review but I would trust the advice Dr Ghosh gives you.My 19 year old daughter has very short sighted eyes and I will be bringing her to Dr Ghosh when she is 21 and her sight has stabilised. The whole experience was edifying.Thank you to reception and Anita Murphy as well. They were lovely.

I visited the My Hearing Clinic knowing I needed a hearing assessment but thinking it was just a build up of wax. It came as a shock that I heard a hearing loss which needed addressing. The service I received from Andrew was outstanding! He explained my hearing loss and went through all my options. He recognised that it was a lot of information to take in so made a follow up appointment, giving me sufficient time to think about what I wanted to do. From start to finish the service has been excellent, efficient, professional and friendly from the moment you walk through the door and meet Lee. The clinic is well located, parking on site, high standard of cleanliness. Definitely a recommendation from me. Thank you!
