Lens replacement treatment, also known as Clear Lens Extraction (CLE) or Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE). It is a laser-free vision correction treatment that can remove the need to wear glasses or contact lenses.

Treatment is used to treat a variety of visual problems including:

  • Myopia (short-sightedness)
  • Hypermetropia (long-sightedness)
  • Astigmatism
  • Presbyopia
  • Early cataract

Who is the ideal candidate?

Lens replacement treatment is a procedure for patients looking for freedom from glasses. Often performed on those over the age of 40, who may prove to be unsuitable for excimer laser surgery. This can include individuals with high degrees of short sight or long sight that may be beyond the safe treatment limits with excimer laser. It may also be a more appropriate procedure for individuals who have early signs of cataract development.

How does it work?

Lens replacement treatment is essentially the same procedure as carried out during a cataract extraction (except that the removed lens has no cataract and is therefore clear) combined with the insertion of an intraocular implant lens. The power of the implant inserted is calculated to give as close to a final prescription to zero as possible, thereby correcting the underlying refractive error.

Are the effects of lens replacement treatment permanent?

Like cataract surgery, the results of lens replacement treatment should be permanent as there is no longer a natural lens in the eye. The capsule behind the eye can thicken following lens replacement, as it can following cataract surgery. This is very easily treated with a quick procedure called YAG laser which can be performed here in clinic.
